Portfolio Bid Strategies in Google Ads for 2026

Stop bidding campaign by campaign. In 2026, portfolio bid strategies stretch your Google Ads budget further. Here is a step-by-step setup and optimization guide.

If you are running a separate bid strategy for every campaign in your Google Ads account, a significant share of your budget may be spent inefficiently. In 2026, Google's machine learning algorithms deliver more consistent results through portfolio bid strategies. In this guide, I will share how to set up a portfolio bid strategy, when you should use one, and concrete thresholds for optimization.

What Is Portfolio Bidding?

Portfolio bidding lets you combine multiple campaigns under a single bid strategy and optimize them toward a shared budget and goal. For example, you can group five campaigns in the same product category into one tCPA (target CPA) portfolio. Google's algorithm moves budget dynamically between the campaigns in the portfolio to lower your total cost per conversion.

When Should You Use a Portfolio Bid Strategy?

  • Campaigns with a similar audience and conversion funnel: For example, different keyword groups for the same product.
  • Campaigns with a shared budget constraint: If your total budget is limited, a portfolio distributes it more efficiently.
  • Campaigns with low conversion volume: By combining campaigns that cannot gather enough data on their own, you speed up the algorithm's learning.

Setting Up a Portfolio Bid Strategy: Step by Step

In the Google Ads interface, go to the "Bid strategies" section and create a "Portfolio bid strategy." Choose the strategy type: tCPA, tROAS, or Maximize conversion value. Then select the campaigns you want to include in the portfolio. Points to watch during setup:

  • Conversion window: Use the same conversion window for all campaigns (for example, 30 days).
  • tCPA or tROAS target: Set a target about 10% below your trailing 30-day average CPA. For example, if your average CPA is $100, set tCPA at $90.
  • Budget sharing: Assign equal budgets to the campaigns in the portfolio at the start; the algorithm will optimize over time.

Example Calculation: Portfolio Optimization with tCPA

Say you have three campaigns: A, B, and C. Trailing 30-day data:

CampaignSpend ($)ConversionsCPA ($)
A10,000100100
B8,00050160
C6,00060100
Total24,000210114.3

The average CPA is $114.3. If you set the portfolio tCPA target at $105, the algorithm will allocate less budget to Campaign B and shift it toward A and C. Estimated new distribution: $12,000 to A, $4,000 to B, $8,000 to C. Total conversions: 120 + 25 + 80 = 225, new CPA: 24,000 / 225 = $106.7. That is a 6.6% improvement.

Thresholds and Checklist for Optimization

Metrics you should monitor regularly after setting up your portfolio strategy, along with intervention thresholds:

  • Conversion volume: Each campaign in the portfolio should receive at least 10 conversions per week. If it is below that, pull the campaign out of the portfolio and try a separate strategy.
  • CPA deviation: If you deviate more than 20% from your target tCPA, revise the target or review your campaign structure.
  • Budget constraint: If the portfolio's total budget is constantly running out, either increase the budget or pause low-performing campaigns.
  • Learning period: After a strategy change, wait at least 2 weeks (or 50 conversions); intervening too early disrupts the algorithm.

Common Mistakes with Portfolio Bidding

The most common mistake is putting campaigns with different conversion funnels into the same portfolio. For example, combining a brand awareness campaign with a direct sales campaign leads the algorithm to optimize in the wrong direction. Also, if the campaigns in the portfolio have different geo-targeting or device targeting, measuring performance becomes difficult. So when building a portfolio, choose campaigns with similar targeting and conversion structures.
